A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the potential threats posed by Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about classified matters in all cars.
Safety Guidance for MoD Staff
During a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
He explained that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but noted that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using every cars from China, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Defence Context
The announcement comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off buses and bring chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
The wider defence environment highlights the importance of robust protocols and caution in all aspects of government operations, from vehicle usage to communication habits.
