More than twenty Olympic champions, mentors and further international athletes have put their names to a letter demanding a halt to the capital punishment of a champion boxer and coach, who is on death row in the country.

Escalating Worldwide Condemnation

Amid rising international outrage over the country's expanding employment of executions as a tool of suppression, the powerfully expressed statement condemns the government's verdict to maintain the capital punishment of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The athlete, three decades old, from the city in north-east Iran, was taken into custody for being involved in countrywide demonstrations in two thousand nineteen and indicted of backing an opposition group. He has spent five years in detention, where he has been mistreated and held in solitary confinement.
