"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the band?" an inquiry reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There's just one problem: The author likewise wants to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are far from alone. Multiple high-profile fans have openly coveted the position.

It's clear something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the best groups, they're a inseparable gang. Their visuals repeatedly show them striding in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such unfettered exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to make music."

Award Nod

The band are speaking from home, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in the running for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the honor is deeply felt by the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge achievement," continues Alana. "However we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project came out of a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words track endings and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed confidence called for a new sound – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

Someone left Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their place in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an international following.

However the sister act will forever be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
