Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
